If you pick up Contingency thinking that you are geting a book about a husband cheating on his wife and how they work through their problems then you are WAY off base! This book is so much more than that! That might be the main theme going through the book but it is certainly not the only one going on. As Paula says, she writes about "real life" and this is as real as it gets. Very seldom do you find a family that is affected by infidelity that is only dealing with the one issue of infidelity. As Paula so brilliantly shows throughout the pages of this book, she explores not only how this sin affects a marriage, but how it affects the children, the "other woman", co-workers, extended family and friends and fellow churchgoers. She beautifully portrays the wisdom of God's word, not just by quoting it in her book, but by having her characters study it and live it out. She also shows their struggle-which to me is "real life". And, just like your life and mine, everything doesn't turn out perfect-but Paula masterfully shows us how a relationship with our Saviour will guide us through no matter what we are facing. My favorite part of the book getting to the end and realizing there was an excerpt to the NEXT book!! I can't wait to read more and more from author Paula Wiseman! If you enjoy reading fiction that accurately depicts today's issues and the way most "real life down to earth" people deal with them-then grab these books as soon as possible! I stumbled across this book on facebook, it looked interesting, and I was on spring break, so I decided to read it. I was blown away when I learned that this was Paula Wiseman's first novel!!! I was so amazed at the way the author applies scripture so practically to everyday life. This book was better than many devotion or Bible study books I've read. After I finished it, I studied the scriptures she used and went back through the book to further study some of the very fresh perspectives and insights she shared on the scriptures used.
The story, itself, and the characters are very well developed. The characters are so real that you find yourself thinking of them as friends. They are flawed, they struggle, they have real doubts and fears and emotions, but the author is able to bring them through a seemingly unsurmountable crisis in a way that is believable and inspiring. The characters never seem preachy or too good to be real. The counsel that the couple receives is wise and well-grounded.
When I finished, I could not wait for the next book, Indemnity, to come out on so that I could read more about my friends, the Molinskys. I was also looking forward to reading more of her very practical application of scripture.
This series is the best Christian fiction I have ever read!!
All I could think to say when I finished this book was, "Wow!" And then, "Would I be able to do that?"
Bobbi and Chuck Molinsky are a typical Christian family, married for eighteen years, with two sons. But their world comes crashing down when Bobbi discovers Chuck's affair with his co-worker.
They never saw adultery coming, but now they are forced to face it head on. Will they choose to seek God's will in their broken marriage even when the pain is beyond anything they've ever experienced?
Paula Wiseman has written an epic story of forgiveness, love, heartache, and trusting God even when the world is breaking apart all around. Though I had never personally experienced the full brunt of what Bobbi and Chuck went through, there were smaller aspects that related to sin in general that I think everyone can relate to on a deep level.
I was sucked into the story from the very first page, and I found it nearly impossible to put down, yet at times I found it necessary to stop, and really ponder certain topics that the book dug up. One thing Contingency hit on that never ceases to to amaze me, is how God can use sin--no He doesn't cause the sin--but God can use things that are devastating for good, even though we can't see it at the time.
Contingency is a tale woven true, with real Biblical answers to tough questions. This book focuses on a God-centered life and marriage, something that is so hard to find in even Christian books. I loved how the characters came across as real people, who reacted in a very real and raw way. They weren't perfect, but each of them was uniquely real and even though coming into the book I thought I wouldn't like Chuck, I did by the end. Why? Because the characters had raw depth, they were 3-demensional and it was almost impossible to believe that they weren't real people.
Overall, this book was fantastic! Deep both emotionally and spiritually, with true Biblical basis. Though it deals with a tough sin, rarely touched upon in Christian fiction, Ms. Wiseman never went into more detail than was appropriate. I would highly recommend this to someone who wants to read a book that will make them think, and wants a book where characters deal with tough problems Biblically. Contingency surpassed all my expectations! Definitely a book I will remember!
